Abstract

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is the most common chronic neurological disease of the central nervous system that affects over 2.4 million people world-wide. The prevalence varies from 1:100,000 in equatorial areas to 6 to 14 per 100,000 in southern Europe and United States, to 30 to 80 per 100,000 in northern Europe and United States, and southern Australia. MS is characterized by inflammation, demyelination and gliosis in the central nervous system, with lesions widely disseminated in time and place. These can manifest as an array of symptoms and signs that limit function (disability) and restrict participation, representing a large societal and financial burden.
