The members of the Academic Advisory Group (AAG) began discussion on selecting a topic for this 2018 volume in April 2016, when the AAG met at the biennial meeting of the SEERIL in New York City. The completion of the Paris Agreement in December 2015 encouraged selection of the topic of Energy Innovation. This Agreement is an im-portant next milestone in the international combat against climate change; it has the approval of 195 nations of the world including the significant energy powers. While the core commitments— nationally determined contributions (NDC)— are voluntary, the Agreement sets measurable goals and requires nations to report on their progress in meeting their NDC standards.
