Abstract

It is a little known fact that Catharine Macaulay, the republican historian, was a cousin of Thomas Knight, who adopted Edward Austen, Jane Austen's brother. This paper explores this family connection, showing that the Gregories, referred to by Austen in a letter to her sister Cassandra, are in fact Macaulay's daughter and grandchildren and identifying the Mr Maxwell and Miss Sawbridge also mentioned in this letter.
