Abstract

Learning in social settings such as the mathematics classroom involves complex processes combining cognitive, affective and social elements. The Social Unit of Learning project is an international collaborative project that aims to understand learning as a social phenomenon and, particularly, how it occurs in the mathematics classroom. Collaborative problem solving is used as a way to create situations whereby students have to negotiate meaning overtly in a social setting.
