The basics of ultrasound and sonochemistry were introduced in this article, linking them to selected applications that include the engineering of metallic composites, sonogelation and sonoelectrochemistry. The basic concepts and applications discussed in this article may provide necessary background knowledge for the rest of the articles covered in this issue.
