Abstract

Epilepsy is a common neurological disease that is characterized by an increased likelihood of experiencing seizures: events of pathological, hypersynchronous activity of neural networks. The development of epilepsy is influenced by complex interactions between genes and the environment, and is most common in young and old populations. About 60–70% of patients can control seizures with antiseizure drugs, which inhibit seizure development and propagation. The remaining individuals often require surgical resection or novel methods of controlling seizures.
