Abstract
Independent local newspapers with a community activist slant have played an important part in grass roots urban activism since the late 1960s. In Australian inner city areas they provided a tier of media coverage of protest and resistance movements often lacking in city-or nationwide papers. Concentrating largely on Australian examples–most notably the first few years of the Melbourne Times — this paper examines the inner-city activist media and looks at the long-term impact such papers have had since the 1970s. This article has been peer-reviewed.
