Case study research is widely used within information systems. This chapter provides an introduction to case study research and discusses a number of issues which have an impact on the successful completion of case study research. We define case study research and highlight its inherent flexibility, discussing the most widely used types of case studies and the different philosophical paradigms within which case study research is conducted. We then provide detailed discussions about the issues that influence the design and conduct of case study research.
