Millions of children are exposed to general anesthetics every year to undergo surgical operations and painful interventions worldwide. Research in animals has raised substantial concerns regarding the effects of anesthetic exposure on the developing brain and several epidemiological studies have addressed this important clinical concern. This chapter assesses available animal studies into the effects of commonly used anesthetics on brain structure and cognitive function and their relevance to clinical pediatric anesthesia practice as well as the current clinical evidence.
