Abstract

As noted in Chapter 1, researchers around the world recognise there are problems with student participation and achievement in mathematics and science and with teaching these subjects. Of particular concern are widespread shortages of suitable secondary mathematics and science teachers, the teaching of mathematics and physical science in primary schools, lower levels of student participation in mathematics and science at senior secondary and tertiary levels, and declining student performance against national and international measures of achievement in these subjects.
