Abstract

The nature and quality of the relationship that forms between clinicians and participants in the forensic setting is thought to have a profound influence on treatment outcomes. This chapter considers why personal safety should be regarded as a pre-requisite for the formation of strong therapeutic alliances, and how a perceived lack of safety should be considered to be a key characteristic of environments that do not allow personal change to occur.
