The uses of court-ordered psychiatric and psychological reports in South Australian magistrates' courts

This article examines the uses of mental health reports requested by magistrates in South Australia through the Court Assessment Unit over a six month period in 1999. A total of 91 requests were made over this period, of which 67 were for psychiatric reports and 16 for psychological reports. In the other instances, either both types of report were requested or the magistrate did not specify which professional should complete the report. A small number of magistrates were responsible for a large number of requests, suggesting some inconsistency in the use of the court report service.
