Non-stimulant Drug Treatments for Adults with ADHD

Abstract

The psychostimulants (methylphenidate and amfetamines) are safe and effective treatments for many adults with ADHD and should be considered as the first-line pharmacological agents in many cases. However, prescribing choices depend on more than just efficacy. Other important factors include the following: adverse effects, toxicity, personal preferences, the presence of coexisting medical and/or psychiatric problems, cost, and the potential for diversion.
