Construction of risk in government advertising: A case study of Operation Sovereign Borders video advertisement

Abstract

As a wide-spread perception of threat increases across a number of countries, risk management has become ever more prominent in the discourse of governments. The aim of this study is to examine the discursive construction of risk in an official federal Australian government video advertisement. Specifically, in the context of the large Operation Sovereign Border campaign, we use multimodal discourse analysis to show ways that seeks to deter irregular maritime arrival.
