Liver infections

Abstract

Diffuse liver infections may be caused by liver-specific hepatitis viral infections or as part of systemic viral infections. The role of surgery in liver infections was previously related to local infections such as bacterial or amoebic abscesses and complicated hydatid diseases. Improvements in antibiotic therapy and interventional radiology have reduced the role of surgical intervention to a last resort. Surgery remains a significant option for hydatid diseases and for source control of bacterial infections.
