Abstract
This chapter describes how inflammatory bowel disease mainly consists of ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease. The aetiology remains unknown but the treatment involves both medical and surgical options. How these diseases usually present with different anatomical distributions and pathological features is discussed. However, both can present as toxic colitis. Inflammatory bowel disease requires a coordinated management plan involving medical and surgery modalities of treatment. Medical management, including agents such as sulfasalazine with escalation to steroids, immunomodulators and biological agents, is explained.
