Abstract
Constipation is a common presenting symptom and affects up to 30% of the adult population. To understand how to investigate and manage constipation in the outpatient setting, the basic principles of colonic physiology are required. This chapter outlines physiology related to the development of constipation and associated physiological investigations. It also outlines an approach to chronic constipation that incorporates history, physical examination, investigations and ongoing non‐surgical and surgical management to optimise the patient's quality of life.
