DOES PAY FOR PERFORMANCE IN HOSPITALS SAVE LIVES?

Abstract
Introduction Pay for performance is increasingly used as a way of improving the quality of medical care. We previously showed that a pay for performance scheme targeting a range of processes measures in hospitals in the North West of England was associated with a substantial reduction in mortality for pneumonia, myocardial infarction and heart failure equivalent to 890 fewer deaths (Sutton et al.
