Australia, like other countries, experienced a range of extreme environmental events in 2017, including heat waves and bushfires as well as rather flamboyant political disagreements about appropriate legal responses at the federal, state, and local levels. The country continues to pursue an energy policy that is, at times, divergent between the Commonwealth government (which continues to focus on traditional fossil-fuel based supply) and the governments of the states and territories (some of which have signalled greater support for renewable energy).
