Shape memory alloy (SMA)-confined normal- and high-strength concrete

Recently, the use of a new class of smart materials known as shape memory alloy (SMA) is being considered to confine concrete. Although a small number of studies have been conducted to understand the mechanical performance of concrete confined by SMAs, they have only considered normal-strength concrete (NSC). The popularity of high-strength concrete (HSC) in the construction industry has been on a steady incline due to the superior performance and economy offered by HSC over NSC in various structural engineering applications. This presentation investigated the axial compressive behavior of HSC confined by SMA spirals.
