Protein domains are the structural, functional and evolutionary units of proteins. A useful way to predict the function and structure of a new protein coding gene, or one which is poorly genetically or biochemically characterised, is to identify the domain architecture on the basis of the amino acid sequence, and then infer function and structure from other proteins with similar domain architectures. The first part of my thesis concerns improving techniques for identification of protein domains from amino acid sequence. I investigate the application of language modelling techniques from speech recognition to integrate contextual information into domain prediction. This takes advantage of the..
