A key feature of cell clearance by the physiological program of apoptosis is safe recognition of the intact dying cell by phagocytes, which protects surrounding tissues against noxious cell contents, usually without eliciting a pro-inflammatory response from the ingesting phagocyte. Where the load of apoptotic cells is large the clearance job is done by macrophages, but elsewhere semi-professional phagocytes mediate clearance of dying cells. In a growing number of in vitro studies from various groups, it has been possible to show that individual phagocyte types employ a predominant recognition mechanism for uptake of apoptotic cells of various lineages. These include (i) phagocyte lectin-lik..
