Abstract
Devices that harness quantum physics offer unique tools for probing the nanoscale world, understanding complex materials, and constructing ultrasensitive sensors. However, most quantum systems can operate only at cryogenic temperatures or in ultrahigh vacuum. In this chapter, we detail an emerging quantum system in diamond that operates under ambient conditions and is providing new insights into magnetic materials at the nanoscale. We discuss the properties of this new sensor, and highlight some recent developments, in particular in investigation of ferromagnetics and magnetic resonance at the nanoscale.
