Abstract

This working paper provides an overview of two distinct experiences to adopting ethnographic methods in urban research. It draws on the authors’ research in Melbourne, Australia and Buenos Aires, Argentina across the built environment fields of urban planning and design. The methodological approaches developed by the authors draw on their own experiences to capitalise on ’experiential sameness’ (Mohammad, 2001, p.104): to build on their knowledge of the ’researcheds reality’ (Ibid) or as ’insiders afterwards’ (Norell, 2007, p.106).
