This paper analyses the Australian grains industry value chain from a technology and data perspective. The grains industry is described and opportunities are explored which may provide improved value chain coordination, information sharing, and overall profitability for actors in the value chain, particularly from the viewpoint of crop inputs as a key expense item and driver of grain farm profitability. Some current and emerging technologies are identified which have the potential to facilitate better value chain coordination with the goal for the grower to extract greater returns from the value chain.
