Abstract
The individuals and organisations that shaped the new city of Canberra are investigated revealing that historical and political circumstances created particular forms of music. The interrogation of archival sources, historical records, newspaper reports and personal reminiscences, shows how music can build—and sometimes divide—communities. Set against the historical background of Canberra, the chapter illuminates our understanding of the development of cultural activity in Australia.
