Abstract
Accountability is an important implication of the democratic rationale for free speech. Democratic forms of government are commonly said to frame power and hold it to account, in part through mediated speech. Public speech is not just directed by those with power, nor is it subject only to prevailing social powers, but it does, at least in part, interrogate those with power (Kenyon et al. 2017, p. 32).
