Abstract

This series of video portraits uses documentary filmmaking & co-creation methodologies to develop counter-narratives to the mainstream media representation of Australian South Sudanese Youth in Victoria. Created in 2018 when negative media reporting was disproportionately focused on young South Sudanese Victorians and so-called 'African gangs', the project engaged young Australians of South Sudanese descent in a series of mentored capacity building workshops focused on documentary production techniques. The resulting individual authored pieces to camera offer a unique insight into the lived experiences of South Sudanese Youth in Victoria.
