Appeals to valuelessness: Objectivity, authenticity and the news discourse

The purpose of this essay is to focus upon the relationship between the discursive formation of news as produced in newspaper reports and what can be called, after Pecheux,1 the 'intradiscursive'. I use this term to designate the process by which a discourse constitutes and demarcates its objectives through hierarchical rules, values, and meanings. In what follows, I shall demonstrate how this process reinforces and underwrites the newspaper text as authoritative. Reading the role of intradiscourse within the reports produced by newspapers serves therefore to subvert that discourse's appearance of monologic and unitary dominance.
