This chapter expands upon previous reviews dealing with the structure and reactivity of seleniranes, telluriranes, selenirenes and tellurirenes. These highly reactive three-membered rings have been isolated as the iranium or irenium salts at low temperatures with a broad range of substituents on the chalcogen and ring carbons. More often they are presumed intermediates in a swathe of reactions with the last decade rapidly building upon the previously known examples with incorporation into multiple synthetic strategies toward natural products. Key applications include enantioselective and/or catalytic electrophilic cyclization, the syn-dichlorination of alkenes, conjugation of large biomolecu..
