Abstract

This chapter explores the situation of Arabic language in Australia in general, and how the Standard Arabic is taught, especially at the University of Melbourne. The chapter further explains the author’s different experiences in teaching Arabic in different global geographical locations, educational contexts, student cohorts from Arabic speaking background and non-Arabic speakers and their general, special and specific purposes and the role of those aspects in determining the best practices and approaches in teaching Arabic. The chapter concludes with author’s views on challenges in teaching Arabic language and the best way forward in terms of approaches, textbooks and teaching modes and too..
