A Pedagogy that Uses a Kaggle Competition for Teaching Machine Learning: an Experience Sharing

Abstract

This paper proposes a pedagogy with the use of a Kaggle competition for teaching machine learning based on the principles of game-based learning and social constructivism. The pedagogy is devised based on the teaching experience of a machine learning subject with master students at our university. The pedagogy is formulated as a 7-step online competition-based teaching model. In the teaching model, a Kaggle competition is organized to be game-like so as to make the learning more engaging and fun.
