Abstract

This chapter chronicles the evolution of lawyers and lawyering since the introduction of Đổi mới, focusing on the contemporary period and the ways in which the Party-state manages the profession. We rely on incomplete fragmentary statistics provided by Party-state institutions, eleven interviews with legal practitioners, scholars and an official from the Ministry of Justice (MOJ) between October 2017 and November 2018, 1 and organisational websites, online newspapers and Vietnamese lawyers' Facebook sites.
