Abstract

Membrane technology is cited as one of the most exciting current market trends in the biopharmaceutical industry. This article examines the principles of membrane chromatography and expands on a recent cost model, that compares the direct and indirect costs of membrane and traditional column chromatography modules in a commonly used polishing step - anion exchange chromatography (AEX) for the purification of monoclonal antibodies (MAbs). The economic model includes a detailed examination of the materials, labor, upfront equipment costs, and running expenses, as well as some of the more intangible benefits this technology provides.
