Aaron Hale-Dorrell’s book is an attempt to save Khrushchev from some of the criticism he has received for his championing of corn in his agricultural policies. Hale-Dorrell does not deny that Khrushchev got carried away in his enthusiasm for corn; nevertheless, he wants to credit Khrushchev with the positive developments that occurred in Soviet agriculture over the period (1953–64). He compares his portrayal with the totally negative picture of Khrushchev provided by his political enemies. Hale-Dorrell goes too far, however, giving Khrushchev too much credit for the revolution that took place and underestimating the damage that Khrushchev’s campaigning style had on the Soviet economic system..View full abstract
