Abstract

Much like the Japanese art of flower arranging, bonsai is considered an art form of high aesthetic value, striving through an intimate and patient study of nature, to achieve a balance of truth and beauty. It is thought the first bonsai exhibit to take place in Europe occurred in Paris for the 1878 Exposition Universelle and the first display in England was for the ‘Japan-British Exhibition’ held at White City, Shepherd’s Bush in 1910. The latter featured over 2,000 plants ranging from 25 to 300 years in age. By this time the European market with flooded with Japanese arts and crafts, most of which were created for export.
