Abstract

This chapter examines the topic of the double. It focusses on the chivalric novel Amadís de Gaula and its translation into French. It examines in particular the last volume translated by Nicolas are Herberay des Essarts and published in 1548 under the long programmatic title Le Huitiesme Livre d’Amadis de Gaule, auquel sont recitées les hautes prouesses et faitz merveilleux d’Amadis de Grece, surnommé le Chevalier de l’ardante Espée [The eight Book of Amadis of Gaul, in which are told the high feats and marvelous deeds of Amadis of Greece, nicknamed the Knight of Fiery Sword].
