Abstract

This thesis examines women’s experiences and perceptions of life during the Indonesian occupation of East Timor. It draws primarily upon oral history interviews to explore how women experienced the violence of the invasion, the initial period of conflict, and then survived, through both negotiation and resistance, the presence of the occupying regime within their lives. Throughout the thesis, I provide new evidence of the ways in which violence became deeply interwoven with everyday social and cultural life in East Timor.
