Abstract

Sediment permeability and its heterogeneity exert strong control on the hyporheic exchange which underpins several hydrological, biogeochemical and ecological services provided by streams. Streambed permeability has been observed to vary over several orders of magnitude, both in space and time. This thesis argues that a definitive explanation for this observed variability has not been provided due to limited fundamental understanding of three critical in-stream processes- bioturbation, fine sediment clogging, and bioclogging.
