Abstract Background: Antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) programs are well established initiatives for the rationalisation and conservation of antimicrobial use. Surgical antimicrobial prophylaxis (SAP) has been identified as the most common indication for antimicrobial use in Australian hospitals, with low rates of appropriateness in both public and private hospitals. There is a paucity of literature targeting surgical AMS programs that are applicable to both sectors.
