Parathyroid hormone-related protein (PTHrP; gene name PTHLH/Pthlh) acts as a paracrine/autocrine factor to produce a range of effects, including contributing to skeletal development and determining trabecular bone mass. By activating the receptor (PTH1R) that PTHrP shares with parathyroid hormone (PTH), it transduces cascades coupled with the stimulation of cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) protein kinase A (PKA) and CREB responses.
