Abstract
A collection of haiku and senryu written over the past ten years adhering to the dictum of Matsuo Basho to write along two axes, the perpendicular (historical/traditional)and the horizontal (contemporary/new), with a four page introduction addressing the essential elements of the form. This collection represents forty years wrestling with the form when only in the past ten years I have managed to begin to understand and execute work that to me satisfies what is sometimes referred to as 'the spirit of haiku'.
