Abstract
John F. Kihlstrom has spent his career investigating issues related to cognition in social and personal contexts. He has produced significant works on the understanding of the unconscious mental life within the cognitive context, specifically implicit memory and perception. Kihlstrom describes how individuals perceive the self from a social‐cognitive knowledge base, constructing the idea of themselves through experience. He argues that social intelligence is responsible for differences in individual personality due to the availability of implicit (procedural) and explicit (declarative) knowledge used by individuals in social interactions.
