Abstract

Endocrinological disorders can be related to stroke in four ways. First, endocrinological disorders may contribute to the development of stroke. This can be as an identified risk factor for stroke such as diabetes mellitus, or it can be more indirect as the causative disorder for a particular risk factor (e.g., a pheochromocytoma in the development of hypertension, hyperthyroidism in the development of atrial fibrillation). Second, endocrinological disorders may affect the outcome of stroke. This is demonstrated most clearly by the negative effects of hyperglycemia on the outcome of strokes.
