Creative Arts-Based Group Therapy with Adolescents: Theory and Practice | Routledge | Published : 2019

Abstract

The authors present research projects from pedagogical dance and school-based music therapy groups that were aimed at addressing youth whose sexualities have been marginalized by White patriarchal structures. They consider how adolescent sexualities, particularly for adolescents from nondominant groups, have been pathologized, and suggest how group leaders might adopt anti-oppressive and after-queer practices to support adolescents in creating safe spaces to examine and transcend negative cultural messages. Recommendations for group practitioners working with teens are provided.
