Abstract

Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP), noninvasive intermittent positive pressure ventilation (NIPPV), heated humidified high flow nasal cannula (HHFNC), and noninvasive high-frequency ventilation (nHFV) are modes of noninvasive respiratory support (NRS) used in clinical practice. We describe results of an umbrella review, conducted using standard methods for meta-analysis, of the association between NRS use and bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD). The use of CPAP with or without intubated surfactant and extubate (INSURE) procedure reduced the risk of BPD compared to mechanical ventilation (risk difference (RD), –0.06; confidence interval (CI) –0.11 to –0.01; number needed to treat (NNT), ..
