Abstract
Complex diseases of the retina are the leading causes of irreversible vision loss in industrialized nations. Often the first step in developing novel treatments for these diseases is the use of animal models to support investigations. There are many genetic and environmental models in rodents, cats, dogs and pigs which show features of age related macular degeneration, glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy. This chapter summarizes the most commonly available models and the features of human disease that they replicate.
