Yoga classes may be good for staff wellbeing, but solid leadership is better

Abstract

Teachers are the biggest in-school influence on student learning outcomes (Hattie, 2009). It is therefore important that those teachers working in schools are performing at optimal levels. How teachers feel everyday impacts on their teaching practice (Briner and Dewberry, 2007). The recent Teaching and Learning International Survey (TALIS) reports that 24 percent of Australian teachers experience "a lot of stress" in their workplace, compared to 18 percent across the OECD (Thomson and Hillman, 2020). Teacher sick leave has been linked to elevated stress levels (Lee et al., 2015) and for teachers leaving the profession within the first five years of their career (Chambers Mack et al., 2019). ..
