The Mathematics Learning Attributes Valued by Students in Eastern China

Abstract

Purpose: Given that prior research has confirmed that students’ mathematics values significantly affect their mathematics learning, understanding how students’ values form and change, especially during different learning stages, is an important topic. Design/Approach/Methods: This study administered a questionnaire to investigate the values of primary, junior high, and senior high school students in Eastern China. A principal component analysis was conducted to investigate the factor structure of the students’ learning values. Hengjun Tang was responsible for writing the abstract, the bulk of the main body, finalizing the paper and responding to the reviewers' comments. He covered various aspects of the paper including the collection and analysis of WIFI data, as well as the interpretation of Chinese students' values in math learning from a Chinese cultural perspective. Wee Tiong Seah developed the WIFI questionnaire based on English literature, participated in the translation between English and Chinese versions of the questionnaire, participated in the writing of data analysis and discussion part, and polished the text of the paper. Based on the Chinese and English literatures, Qiaoping Zhang wrote the introduction part of the paper, participated in the revision of the data analysis and discussion part, and polished the text of the paper. Based on the Chinese literature, Weizhong Zhang identified the values of Chinese students in mathematics learning, and participated in the revision of the whole paper.
