Abstract

Shoot-labelling techniques have been successfully adapted for quantifying below-ground N in legume species. The field studies suggested that 24% or more of total legume N was associated with, or derived from roots. The value of legume rotations have been greatly underestimated in past calculations because this below-ground contribution of N has previously been ignored.
